"Sunlit Sardines" displays schooling sardines in sunlit kelp forest in False Bay, Cape Town. Although sardines dont feed within kelp forest systems, it is an image that to me epitomises the importance of the sun's energy in driving the kelp forest ecosystems of the region. Here ocean upwelling brings clear, nutrient rich deep waters into the photic or sunlit zone. Clear nutrient rich waters that provide ideal conditions for ocean photosynthesis, the primary production that drives the incredible coastal and offshore productivity of upwelling systems.
