Seal Summer

Seal Summer

A Cape fur seal bullets through clear summer upwelled water in a kelp forest on the Atlantic coast of Cape Town. On land, they may look a bit clumsy, but underwater, they are ballerinas transforming into graceful and agile swimmers. Endemic to Southern Africa, with colonies stretching from Angola to Algoa Bay, Cape fur seals were historically hunted to extremely low levels for their pelts. Populations have now recovered to their former numbers, highlighting the resilience of the ocean when pressures decline.
